In the footsteps of the Scottish writer R.L. Stevenson in the Auvergne and Cévennes
In the autumn of 1878, the young Scottish writer, R.L. Stevenson, who would become famous with his book “Treasure Island”, settled in a small village south of Le Puy-en-Velay to prepare an initiatory journey through the Cévennes. A month later, he left Monastier-sur-Gazeille with, as his only companion, Modestine, a capricious donkey, who carried his luggage. He set out to meet the Cévenols, the descendants of the Camisards who fought and were persecuted after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. It took him 12 days to reach St. Jean du Gard, after having crossed the Velay, the Gevaudan and finally, the Cevenol country. He will tell, later, this journey in a book entitled “Travel with a donkey in the Cevennes”.
We suggest you to follow the route taken by R.L. Stevenson and to start this hike in Monastier sur Gazeille. You will cross the Velay, vast plateau rather than mountain, deeply cut by beautiful rivers. Then you will walk through the dark, forest-covered Gévaudan before undertaking the long climb to Mont Lozère. Then you will switch to Pont de Montvert and the Cevennes region. Here you are in the land of chestnut forests that cover all the valleys before giving way to vineyards as you approach the gates of the Midi.
